I don’t know about you but there is something exciting about drinking out of a water bottle or any sort of funky looking cup. Not only does it encourage me to drink more water, but it also means I don't spill anything anywhere. Now for the majority of my adult life (2 years excluding the ending of my teens), I have always drunk from a plastic throw away water bottle. My usual goto was the Pump or Mount Franklin water bottles as they were easy to pick up at work. I've always known how bad these bottles were for the environment but I justified it by only buying one bottle every 1-2 weeks. I kept telling myself I needed to get a reusable water bottle that I could use instead of the plastic ones but if I'm honest, I didn't want to spend money on it (which makes no sense as you spend way more on non-reusable plastic over time) and id always forget about buying one when I was at the shops.
I have now come to realise that this isn't an excuse. When plastic bags are thrown away they usually end up in landfills or in waterways and oceans….in a landfill, plastics may take up to 1,000 years to degrade and they break down into tiny particles that contaminate our soil and water. Although this is spoken from an American view, plastic is universal and its havoc on the environment is seen all around the world. Furthermore, plastic bottles alone take up to 450 years to decompose when not recycled properly.
Enough environmental talk, now for the nitty-gritty and why you guys are all here. I bought my beautiful stylish matte black stainless steel water bottle from Kmart for a low price of $7. As a uni student, my funds are limited. Kmart is cheap and I can't really justify spending $50 on “the highest grade of stainless steel water bottle." I can't be certain that this bottle is the highest quality stainless steel but it was cheap and it doesn't affect the environment. Stainless steel water bottles are great for insulating your cold or hot water. The bottle can become hot on the outside but is able to maintain the temperature of the water on the inside. Which will come in handy when tanning at the beach on a hot summers day.
Another Great environmentally friendly choice is a glass water bottle. Glass water bottles work well. Glass-like the stainless steel bottle doesn't contain harmful chemicals such as BPA and PVC which many reusable and non-reusable plastic water bottles do. These chemicals can both affect you and the environment. Glass water bottles are easy to refill and most come with silicone or soft material cases to protect the glass from breaking. I didn't choose the glass bottle as I’m notorious for dropping things or hitting my bag into things. Breaking my glass water bottle would be a nightmare for me and I'm not willing to risk it.
The best idea is to choose a water bottle that suits your lifestyle. Whether you work full time, run a household, go to uni or love the gym water bottles are essential in everyday life. Some people need larger bottles than others and especially for gyms it's important to choose one that won't break and will fit into the equipment.
Shopping around for the perfect environmentally friendly water bottle can be a hard task. I've linked the bottle I purchased below and some more expensive alternatives which have been highly recommended on wirecutter.com. Some of the bottles listed aren’t available in Australia so I have found some alternatives which can be purchase in Australia.
